Day 11, Monday, Book of Faith – Lenten Journey

2010 March 1
by Pastor Keith

I think today’s reading gives us permission to think of other images that could be used to symbolize the kingdom of God. How can the ordinary inspire us to think of the extraordinary nature of God’s kingdom?

I didn’t have to think long or hard about an image that works for me right now. It isn’t all that ordinary, but I think it is a good vision of the kingdom: The opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. All the countries coming together. The fellowship and the celebrating. The goodwill and the joy. The offering and sharing of our best. It is a small glimpse of the life to come and certainly is a guide for what we want to be living into today. It is something “ordinary” that gives us a glimpse of the extraordinary nature of God’s kingdom.

So, do your have any ideas? Anything in ordinary life strike you as another good image for the kingdom of God? Share it with us, please. I/we look forward to dwelling in that image with you!

As I write this I’m at my father’s home staying with him and his wife. As you know my father doesn’t have very long to live although at this moment he is doing extremely well.

Pastor Keith asks how the kingdom of God has reached us in ordinary life. For me and many of my siblings it is being given an opportunity to reconnect with our Dad because of his illness. We have once again discovered the treasure that we feel was hidden from us for sometime and we rejoice! I thank God daily for this opportunity and the blessing that he has given to us because of Dad’s illness for without it we would not be where we are today; spending time with him and his wife, hearing stories and reliving memories of long ago, establising a relationship with them both. Thanks be to God!!
