Day 5, Monday, Book of Faith – Lenten Journey

2010 February 22
by Pastor Keith

Do we really want God to enable us to make God’s name holy in all that we do? How bold is it to ask God to enable us to act in ways that express God’s righteousness? When we do so, when we hallow God’s name within our daily lives we are guaranteed that the forces of darkness that line up against God will line up against us as well. As the author says, this request “is not for the faint of heart.”

In the waters of Baptism we are made holy. God’s Holy Spirit is given to us just as it was given to Jesus as his baptism, making us holy. How does that holiness get expressed in our daily life? How do we express the holiness of the name we were baptized into?

I never considered that I was asking God to act in a certain way when I prayed the Lord’s Prayer but as I pray it right now I suppose I am. Interesting. It concerns me when I read: “Not everyone who say to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven”. These words make me feel as though the onus is on us to ‘do’ rather than on God’s grace.
We are sinful beings and even though we try to do what God asks we don’t always do it. Maybe we don’t listen to his call, we’ve got other things to do, maybe we’re fearful we’ll fail or look foolish; there are countless reasons really. And just when we think we might be doing alright, at least for me, I start to question; did I hear you correctly, is it my ego that is causing me to do this (my need for recognition) or am I doing it for the right reasons. I pray my heart is in the right place.
