“Baobab Blast” – God’s Great Get – Together in The African Savannah is a Ecumenical Vacation Bible School which will be held August 9th –12th Monday –Thursday from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church 2714 James St. Marinette. Six area churches are sponsoring the bible school. They are St. James Lutheran Church, Peace United Church of Christ, Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Zion Lutheran Church of Marinette, Good Shepherd Lutheran of Peshtigo and First Presbyterian Church of Menominee.

Children ages 3-6th grade are welcome to attend this free event. Each evening will begin with a delicious supper followed by crafts, games, science, music, and lesson time.

On Thursday evening the children will travel by bus to the DeYoung Zoo in Wallace Michigan to experience the African wildlife. Registrations forms are available at each church, online at www.zionlutheran-marinette.org or by calling Zion Lutheran Church at 715 735-7898.

Mission Project

Every year we have a mission project at VBS. With our African theme around animals we wanted to do something local for this area. We have adopted the Menominee Animal Shelter as our project. Please look at the following list and try to bring at least one item to bible school. There will be a special area in the dinning hall to place your offerings for the animals.

ONGOING NEEDS:

Dog Treats – rawhide bones and soft chewies for training purposes

Cat Litter – both clumping and non-clumping types are used at the shelter

Dog Food (dry), Cat Food (dry), Kitten Food (dry)

Note: PLEASE! No food dyes.

Litter Boxes (dish pans work great)

Old Bath Towels

Old Blankets

Rugs

Disposable Gloves

Bleach

Dish Soap

Dish Washing Sponges

Paper Towels

For Vacation Bible School August 9-12th we will need your help in many ways:

Volunteer to be a helper even if only for one night. We need people to help with registration, nametags, games, crafts, kitchen crew for supper on Wed. decorating or just following a group from activity to activity. It does not matter your age and men would especially be nice. We will find you a job!

Decorating. We need animal print material or pillows, stuffed dogs, cats or zoo animals. Large tall baskets like the African woman carry on their heads. Chicken wire or small fencing. Fishing poles, a child’s kiddie pool. We need to build a large Baobob tree in the sanctuary.

Animal Shelter

Send something for our mission project for the animal shelter. See next page.

DONATIONS:

We need money to help pay for the bus and the children to go to the Zoo on Thursday night. To sponsor a child is only $5. We need $50 yet to pay for the bus.

FOOD

Sign up for donating food for Wed. night supper. See the clipboard or sign up sheets on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

Bishop Tom Skrenes of the Northern Great Lakes Synod, ELCA presented Pastor Keith with a certificate recognizing his anniversary.

During this service we wished Pastor Keith Godspeed as he prepared to leave for Tanzania. Our service concluded with an African sendoff. The contemporary worship band lead African hymns in worship and the choir sang an African Spiritual. Shawn Limberg directed local students Allison Koerner (7th Grade), Paul LaPlant (8th Grade), and Brittney Koerner (9th Grade) who played their African marimbas and drums. A special reception was held in the fellowship hall after the service.

Pastor Keith left on April 27th for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for a 3 month sabbatical. He is working with the leaders of the Azania Front Lutheran Church to assist with their ministry opportunities. The Eastern and Coastal Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, which encompasses Dar es Salaam and the island of Zanzibar, is experiencing tremendous growth. Within the past eight years, the number of congregations in the diocese has grown by two thirds.

The Northern Great Lakes Synod of the ELCA was paired with this diocese in 1991 and a deep relationship has grown. As recently as May of 2007, a church choir from Dar es Salaam visited our area because of this relationship. Local people have also helped to build a library at a seminary in Kisarawe. The Synod has worked with the Diocese on many other projects.

I will now try to keep up on a blog that I put together. I was testing out the blog before I left, so there are four articles from then, but I have also written two since arriving. There are also a number of pictures on the site. I hope it helps give a small idea of my experience here.

This year, once again, the theme of our morning midweek Lenten services will be different than our evening services. This year our theme for the morning services will be synchronized with the Book of Faith Lenten Journey readings; they will be focusing upon the Lord’s Prayer. The sermons and preachers are as follows:

Feb. 24 – Our Father who art in heaven: Pastor Keith
March 3 – Thy kingdom come: Bill Wretza
March 10 – Thy will be done: Pastor Rick
March 17 – Give us this day our daily bread: Pastor George
March 24 – Forgive us our trespasses: Pastor Keith

The services begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesdays and will be held in our Parish Hall. Following these services there will a time for discussion about the Lord’s Prayer and the Lenten Journey, accompanied, of course, by coffee and snacks.

Midweek Lenten Worship – The Evening Soup Suppers
This year we will once again be gathering for Lenten Soup Suppers followed by a brief devotional service on Wednesday evenings, beginning at 6:00 p.m. This year the soup suppers will be held at a different congregation each week. The overall theme is “Lenten Hymns.” The place, the specific hymn, and the preachers are as follows:

Feb. 24 – Zion Lutheran Church, Marinette.
Theme: “It is Well With My Soul.”
Preacher: Rev. Ron Helgerson.

March 3 – First Presbyterian Church, Menominee.
Theme: “Rejected and Despised.”
Preacher: Rev. William Clyma.

March 10 – Peace United Church of Christ, Marinette.
Theme: “Ah, Holy Jesus.”
Preacher: Rev. Keith Kolstad.

March 17 – Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Marinette.
Theme: “Were You There?”
Preacher: Darrel Diers.

March 24 – St. James Lutheran Church, Marinette.
Theme: “In The Cross of Christ I Glory.”
Preacher: Rev. Craig Mansur.

Since November’s Congregation Council meeting, the Council has been discussing the recent change to the way we do Holy Communion at the Communion rail. At its last meeting the Council asked that more in the congregation become involved in the discussion and thought that an on-line conversation about it would be helpful. So, here it is. What do you think about our recent practice of continuous communion where we do not have people kneel together at once as a group, or “table?”

Here are some of the thoughts about it so far:

1. Time spent in worship is an issue for some, and continuous communion is very efficient, saving about five minutes.

2. Some like the slowness, solemnity and feeling of community with kneeling and being dismissed as a group.

3. Some do not mind the continuous nature of communing by intinction, but are not comfortable with it when we do it at the communion rail, while others are not comfortable with either form of continuous communion.

4. I like the way continuous communion includes the whole community in one non-stop movement.

5. In light of #4 and #2, some have pointed out that continuous communion might actually do more to emphasize the individual rather than the community.

6. There have been some awkward moments with continuous communion initially. This may subside as we practice it more, or it may not.

7. Some have pointed out that our stairs add to the awkwardness of practicing continuous communion, that it would work more smoothly if we did not need to navigate them.

8. Some have wondered what all the hurry is for.

This issue will be discussed again at our March Congregation Council meeting. The Council and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
